Days Off for Employees in 2025

As we enter the beginning of 2025, most employees are already making plans for their vacations and holidays throughout the year. Although the winter holidays have just ended, 2025 brings 17 official public holidays for employees, the same number as in the previous year.

Out of these days, 4 will fall on weekends, and 13 will occur during the workweek.

Here are all the public holidays we will benefit from this year, according to the Labor Code:

  • January 1 – New Year’s Day
  • January 2 – New Year’s Day
  • January 6 – Epiphany
  • January 7 – Saint John the Baptist
  • January 24 – Union of the Romanian Principalities
  • April 18 – Good Friday
  • April 20 – Easter Sunday
  • May 1 – Labor Day
  • June 1 – Children’s Day
  • June 8 – Pentecost
  • June 9 – Pentecost Monday
  • August 15 – Assumption of Mary
  • November 30 – Saint Andrew
  • December 1 – National Day of Romania
  • December 25 – Christmas Day
  • December 26 – Second Day of Christmas

January Brings the Most Days Off

January brings employees the most joy when it comes to public holidays, with no fewer than 5 days off. The new year begins with two days off on January 1 and 2, followed by two more public holidays for Epiphany and Saint John the Baptist. This marks the second year these holidays are officially recognized.

If employers don’t provide a day off on Friday, January 3, employees who can take a vacation day to bridge the gap will enjoy an entire week off, starting work only on January 8.

Spring and Summer Each Offer Four Days Off

Spring brings four public holidays, three of which fall during the workweek, with only Easter Sunday (April 20) falling on a weekend. Since Easter Monday is a public holiday, employees will enjoy a long weekend from April 18 (Good Friday) to April 21.

A similar opportunity arises in the first weekend of May. Employees who take a vacation day on May 2 can connect it to May 1 (Thursday), another public holiday.

Unfortunately, during the summer, not everyone will benefit from the public holidays on Children’s Day and Pentecost Sunday, as both fall on a Sunday. However, employees can look forward to a long weekend on Monday, June 9 (Pentecost Monday), and another extended weekend in mid-August for Assumption of Mary, which falls on Friday, August 15.

Autumn 2025 Brings No Public Holidays

September and October bring no public holidays. The only opportunity in November for a day off, Saint Andrew’s Day, falls on a Sunday this year. Thus, we’ll have to wait until December to enjoy three days off: December 1 (Romania’s National Day) and December 25 and 26 (Christmas).

Teachers Enjoy Three Additional Days Off

Teachers have three extra days off in addition to the 17 public holidays, as per the Collective Labor Agreement:

  • April 22 – Third Day of Easter
  • June 5 – Teacher’s Day
  • October 5 – World Teachers’ Day

Exceptions

Two important points must be mentioned if days off are not granted:

  1. According to Article 139 of the Labor Code, employees of a different recognized religious denomination have their days off for Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Pentecost Sunday, and Pentecost Monday granted according to the date these holidays are celebrated by their denomination. For individuals of legally recognized non-Christian religions, employers must provide alternative days off or allocate vacation days for these celebrations.

  2. Employees required to work on public holidays are entitled to compensation with time off within the next 30 days or a salary bonus of 100% of their basic salary. Employers who fail to compensate employees accordingly risk fines ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 lei.

Now that you know when you’ll have days off, all that’s left is to start planning how you’ll spend them!
