The First and the Second Day of Pentecost, Legal Days Off for Romanian Employees

Pentecost 2015: Monday, June 1st, is legal day offIn 2015, the employees benefit from a total of 12 legal days off and five of them are on weekends.

The next legal days off that the Romanian employees will benefit are the first and second day of Pentecost, according to the Labor Code. This year the first and the second day of Pentecost are on 31 May and 1 June and the employees with fixed working hours, Monday to Friday, will enjoy an extended weekend on Monday, June 1st.

Since this year the Catholic and Orthodox Easter were celebrated on different days, the feast of Pentecost will also be on different days, so the Catholic employees will benefit of the legal days off for the Orthodox and the Catholic Pentecost, according to the Labor Code. Read more about this legal provision here.

After this long weekend, the next day off will be on August 15 – the Assumption, on a Saturday. Romanians will have two mini-vacations this year, after the Pentecost – one starting on November 30, Saint Andrew (Monday) which continued with Romania’s National Day, December 1. The second mini-vacation will start with the first day of Christmas, which is on a Friday.

Attention! The employers who do not comply with the legal days off and ask its employees to come to work will risk a fine between 5,000 and 10,000 lei. The legal days off cannot be included in the annual holiday.

Who Is Going to Work in the Days Declared Off and how Will Be Reworded

There are categories of employees who are forced to work in the legal days off – the ones who have jobs in which the work cannot be interrupted due to specific activity (e.g. units in the production process that cannot be interrupted or employees of health care facilities and stuff who work in the food industry). These are entitled to a compensatory day off in the next 30 days.

Also, when the compensatory time off cannot be granted for justified reasons, the Labor Code provides that the employees will receive a bonus that cannot be less than 100% of base salary.
